Points for creativity: Selling ad space

March 25th, 2009 by Tannus Quatre PT, MBA

OK, it’s not exactly a healthcare example I have here, but I had to share this “out of the box” idea from Yahoo News that one teacher came up with when faced with the reality of the economic stress placed on even the smallest of budgets – in this case, paper for the classroom.

The problem – no money for paper.  The solution – sell ad space to the pizza joint down the street to pay for the paper.

Ever done before?  Not sure…I’ve never seen it.  Problems with it?  Sure.  Points for creativity?  Absolutely.

Whether you like it or not, I think it’s this kind of creativity and innovation that is going to carve the way for new possibilities not only in our schools, but our healthcare practices as well.

Do we want to see advertising on our script pads?  Probably not…but is there the possibility to share/reduce costs by creating mutual benefit with other businesses that share similar audiences to ours?  You betcha.

Go get creative.

In a cash-strapped Idaho high schoolwhere signs taped near every light switch remind the staff to save electricity, an enterprising teacher has struck a sponsorship deal with a local pizza shop: Every test, handout and worksheet he passes out to his students reads MOLTO’S PIZZA 14″ 1 TOPPING JUST $5 in bright red, inch-high letters printed along the bottom of every page.

Molto Caldo Pizzeria, about a mile from the high school, agreed to supply paper for Harrison’s five classes — 10,000 sheets, valued at $315, and imprinted with a pizza ad. That should be enough paper for the rest of this school year and all of the next one.
