Breakeven analysis for medical practices
For those starting a new medical practice, program or medical service, knowing at what point your investment will “break even” is important to determining whether or not the venture will be economically feasible. The breakeven analysis provides medical practice owners with valuable information with regard to the production and time factors involved with starting a new medical practice, program or service.

Physician office sends patient data to wrong fax number…for 3 years
A Tennessee physician practice apparently sent out hundreds of faxes to a wrong fax number, breaching the privacy of likely hundreds of patients over the course of 3 years. Lots of questions about this one, like the obvious one: why wasn’t this remedied after the first error?
This is a huge HIPAA violation, and should serve as a reminder to make sure procedures are in place to verify and cross-check fax numbers and all other…
Twitter: What’s the point in medical care?…Trust me, there is one.
We love Twitter around here and use it all the time. It’s a great tool for medical practices, though there are many asleep behind the social medial wheel. If I told you I could help you market your practice in a way that was free, easy, fun, and effective…would you be interested?
If so, check out this article from MGMA that does a great job of…
Customer service and referral opportunities are everywhere
As a service industry, stakeholders within private practice health care (physical therapy, medical practice, dental offices, or anything in between) notice a job well done. Whether it’s a pat on the back after a good physical therapy session, or giving your patient your cell phone number after a medical office visit, it’s sometimes the little things that go a long way toward establishing a lifetime relationship with patients.
Another update on the recession, doctors, and payments
A recent article in Physicians Practice does a great job of outlining how the recession is impacting health care in different ways. Outpatient surgeries have dropped while outpatient walk-in visits are up.
Something tells me it’s a good time to have some conservative options under your practice’s belt.
Bottom line: Now is not the time to be driven by unanalyzed fears or groundless optimism. Be responsible for understanding your

Managing phone calls: An important component to office efficiency
Phone calls that come into a medical or health care practice are important. The telephone, because it is not typically a revenue-generating element of the private practice, must be managed well in order for a doctor or health care provider to take care of her patients effectively while still maintaining efficient, profitable operations.
Here are some hints on how to do just this from The Independent Urologist.

Electronic health records: Where are the malpractice risks?
As a follow up to the April 21st post by Tannus Quatre, “Electronic health records: Panacea or problematic?“ the push is on to move our country’s health-care documentation system into the electronic age. The recently passed American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, allows for federal subsidies of up to $44,000 for physicians who demonstrate meaningful use of EMR by 2011. When the financial incentive is there, it will get done.

Points for creativity: Selling ad space
OK, it’s not exactly a healthcare example I have here, but I had to share this “out of the box” idea from Yahoo News that one teacher came up with when faced with the reality of the economic stress placed on even the smallest of budgets – in this case, paper for the classroom.
The problem – no money for paper. The solution – sell ad…
Is the recession really changing our medical practices?
It looks like the recession is changing how we run our medical practices. And we’re not talking comments from the pundits – we’re talking serious research by the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA).
While many of us could probably surmise as much (because we’re probably living it), putting numbers behind how the economy is affecting us and our peers is important an informative.
From a study of 1,850…
