Decision Making by the Numbers
by Tannus Quatre PT, MBA

Physical therapists in program development, managerial, and entrepreneurial roles make myriad decisions that significantly impact their teams, businesses, and livelihoods. The ability to quantify the decision making process through financial analysis is a skill critical to the success of physical therapists in these decision-making roles.

In this 2.5-hour presentation, I will discuss ways in which to reduce the risk associated with important business decisions through the creation of detailed financial projections, as well as through the use of an analytical tool known as the cost-benefit analysis (CBA). The purpose of this presentation is to introduce and simplify these tools, making them a welcome and useful decision-making framework for physical therapists in program development, managerial, and entrepreneurial roles.

Participants will be provided with instruction and access to electronic financial projection and CBA tools that can be used immediately upon completion of the 2.5-hour session.

Market Analysis: How to Predict Success Before Spending Money
by Tannus Quatre PT, MBA

This session will provide practice owners/administrators with the tools necessary to find answers to the questions (1) Who needs us? Will they find us? What will they pay us? In this session, I will discuss how to optimize capital investments by performing a comprehensive and predictive market analysis prior to implementing new programs, expanding into new facilities, or starting a practice for the first time. This session will include practical methods that should be used to analyze the relevant demographic makeup, competitive layout, referral network, and reimbursement sources available to support physical therapy services in a given community. I will discuss the justification/theory for each element of the market analysis as well as provide specific methods, tools, and online resources used to perform the market analysis by a practice owner/administrator. Finally, I will discuss the role the market analysis plays as a key element of a strategic/business plan, and how it should be used to guide business decisions.

American Physical Therapy Association | Private Practice Section
Audioconference
by Tannus Quatre PT, MBA
Registration Info: Online or (703) 299-2410

In this session, we will take a macroeconomic look at the healthcare industry, discussing the trends that are impacting, and will impact PTs in private practice throughout the United States. The session will focus on trends occurring both inside and outside of the physical therapy domain, with specific emphasis on the impact that these trends are having on our profession. Discussion will include the areas of PT referral sources (physicians, specialists, extenders), patient demographics (income, insurance, other economic factors), social programs (Medicare, Medicaid, etc.), payers, and substitutes within related fields (athletic trainers, occupational therapists, chiropractors, personal trainers, massage therapists, etc.). In addition to a presentation of specific data and research into these market trends, we will discuss the ways in which physical therapists must adjust in order to exploit new opportunities and avoid the threats that are developing.

This session is intended for physical therapists/assistants, practice owners, and administrators who have an interest in understanding the economic “big picture” and how this impacts our private practices, and our livelihood as physical therapists.
